Friday 27 July

11.00 am – 4.00 pm – Arrival of ships – Galgewater and de Haven
The ships sail in groups from Warmond to Leiden. The ships enter the city from the west over the Galgewater and from the east over the Oude Rijn. 

5.00 pm – 7.00 pm – Grand Opening and Sail-in – De Haven
Sail Leiden kicks off with a Grand Opening in De Haven (Harbour). All ships sail into the city during the Sail-in, which is a sight to behold. The event will also have a spectacular opening. 

10.00 pm – 12.00 pm – Leiden International Film Festival  – Drijf-in – De Haven 

The Leiden International Film Festival brings an atmospheric water cinema to Leiden. On the first movie night, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe and Jeff Goldblum (yes, all of them) take revenge on a mythical shark in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. 

Saturday 28 July

10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Water taxi – Galgewater and Ankerpark
Water transport will be arranged between the Historic Harbour and the Ankerpark by the cooperating shipping companies using water taxis. This allows visitors to also admire the ships from the water. 

10.00 am – 8.00 pm – History of shipping – Walking route
Along the ‘Blauwe Meander’ (Blue Meander), the Sail Leiden walking route tells the story of the historical role of water in the past of cities such as Leiden. Markets, buildings, places, ships and skippers – there’s a story lurking behind it all. 

10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Exhibition Leidsche Mondialen –  Beestenmarkt
The Leidsche Mondialen is a collective of artists from Leiden and surroundings, which will organise an exhibition during Sail Leiden. 

10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Leidse Reddingsbrigade (Leiden Rescue Brigade) Demonstrations – Beestenmarkt
Of course, the Leidse Reddingsbrigade will be there to take care of safety on the water. But that’s not their only reason for being there, because they’ll also be giving some fantastic demonstrations! 

10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Ambachtelijke Visrokerij Dinkelstroom – Galgewater
Dinkelstroom Artisanal Fish Smokehouse is the cream of the crop when it comes to preparing fish by cooking and smoking it in a large smoke box above an open fire.  

12.00 am – 5.00 pm – Sea folk & shanty festival ‘Naar Zee, Naar Zee’ – Galgewater, Ankerpark and Terra Nova, de Haven
For the sixth year, the Leiden Rumor di Mare Sailor’s Choir organises a nautical music festival in Leiden. You can listen to maritime music by national and international groups played at various stages.  

8.00 pm -12.00 pm – Open Podium Terra Nova – Terra Nova, de Haven
The Leiden Rumor di Mare Sailor’s Choir is also organising an accessible Open Podium at the Terra Nova. You can sing or play yourself and also enjoy folk, blues, pop, jazz with vocals and instrumental numbers.  

10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Kids Programme–  Ankerpark
There is a special programme for young people in the Ankerpark. This is where children can participate in educational and interactive activities. 

10.00 am – 5.00 pm –  Craftsmanship – Ankerpark
Everything about Sail Leiden oozes craftsmanship, and a number of activities have been organised relating to this theme. So you can visit Martijn Vermeer’s special ship, Klaas Hennepoel shipyard will work on the building of an authentic Boeier (a traditional boat) and TAVE will carry out a number of ship-related crafts. 

10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Look on board – Walking route
Around 30 ships will open up to the public in order to allow visitors to experience what it was like to live and sometimes work on a historic commercial vessel. The skipper’s personal stories make for an unforgettable experience, so don’t hesitate to climb aboard! 

10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Leydse Kluchtencompagnie (amateur theater) – Galgewater
The Leydse KluchtenCompagnie performs the farce Doortrapte Melis by W.D. Hooft 1623. This has been specially edited and translated into contemporary Dutch.

10.00 am – 5.00 pm- Nautical market – Galgewater
A ship market will be organised along the ships of the Historic Harbour and from the Stadstimmerwerf to the Molen De Put. As with the annual celebration of Leidens Ontzet (Relief of Leiden), the harbour will be an enjoyable mix of hustle and bustle with music, smoked fish, ship-related items and demonstrations. 

10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Sail Food & Drinks – Galgewater, de Haven and Ankerpark
Enjoy a delicious drink and tasty smoked fish at the Historic Harbour, Oude Haven and the Ankerpark. In the Ankerpark, you can also enjoy an authentic espresso and various good but simple sandwiches along with Frisian sugarbread from Us Bertus. 

10.00 pm – 12.00 pm – Leiden International Film Festival – Drijf-in – De Haven
The Leiden International Film Festival brings an atmospheric water cinema to Leiden. Titanic is a film that everyone has undoubtedly already seen, but never from a (hopefully not sinking) boat! An unmissable dazzling spectacle during the second Drijf-in evening.

Sunday 29 July

2.00 pm – 4.00 pm – Lecture ‘Leidse Weesjongens en de VOC’   – Terra Nova, de Haven
In addition to the Sea Folk and Shanty Festival, the Leiden Rumor di Mare Sailor’s Choir is organising a lecture aboard the Terra Nova. This time it’s by the historian Vincent van Zuilen from De Kennisproeverij and the subject is ‘Leidse Weesjongens op Zee’ (Leiden orphan boys at sea). Admission is free.

Self-unloading equipment with unloading bins and pawl was invented by IJssel skipper Arie Kreuk in 1916. Hundreds of ships have since sailed with self-unloading equipment and this will be demonstrated with a spectacular competition during Sail Leiden. 

12.00 am – 5.00 pm- Vegetable auction Westlanders – Aalmarkt
Goods used to enter the city on ships. This scene is imitated with the Westlanders vegetable auction and fruit and vegetables will be auctioned off for charity. 

11.00 am – 5.00 pm – Original Sail Market – Herengracht and surrounding area
Especially for Sail Leiden, ORGINAL market is organising the SAIL Market, which stands for uniqueness, authenticity, and originality and always with a nice story. Stroll past the stalls and discover the special products that are just a bit different than the usual! At this market we like to offer a varied mix of products ‘with a story’ – from handmade and vintage to sustainably produced, own design and fair trade purchased. 

12.00 am – 5.00 pm – Gaeld’r – Ankerpark and Galgewater
This music trio is known for its charming Irish, Celtic and Scottish music. They give three performances spread out over the Ankerpark (1.00 pm – 1.30 pm and 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm) and the Historic Harbour (2.30 pm – 3.00 pm).

Drum fanfare FBL (Franciscus Band Leiden) is a small and charming music association from Leiden that’s been around for over 69 years. They’re organising music workshops for children in the Ankerpark!
